THE EFFECT OF STRESS ON THE HUMAN BODY

This will be the most disconnected and at times incoherent paper that I
have ever given or hope to give before this or any other group. The subject is
a large one, indeed a very fundamental one, and specific information on it has
been appearing only for the last few years. I have been trying to read and
accumulate facts on it myself»for atterf? three years. To appreciate how fast
details are accumulating, one has only to look at the latest year book on the
subject. In this field, as in many other fields, a book is published each year
listing the important contributions for the year. I called Chicago when I
received notice that I was supposed to talk to you today, and ordered the
latest year book on stress. Instead of receiving the book, I got a letter saying
that it would cost |2°«£0 and asking for a written order. Now a year book costjjip
that much would be encyclopedic and I would not have time to digest it.- J^eedless

considerable time to organize the material that I do have for you.
Years ago I had a professor in school who discussed the giving of papers.
He said, !t If you can't clarify a subject for your audience mystify them;
eS»»^^ and if you do mystify them, they'll probably think you are smarter than if
you clarify the subject." On that basis , I am under the impression that you
will think that I am very smart at the end of this paper.
At the start here, I want to make some general remarks which may seem
to have little in common. But as the paper develops, perhaps they will become
more cohesive. When man's intelligence began to emerge1*eons of years ago, he
he studied first those things farthest away from him - namely the stars and
planets. Astronomy is our oldest science and still offers much material.
As time has gone on man has gradually explored various aspects of his
environment from the largest geological formation down to the atom. He has
