Quest Club Paper
GROWIHG SOCIAL AWARENESS OF THE BUSINESS WORLD
Herbert W. Cooper, C.P.A.
When the subject of this paper was first considered I had In my mind
really two different ideas.
One grew out of a reading of Douglas McGregor's book
The Human Side of Enterprise In which he expands, defines
and defends his "Y" theory of management as compared to
the "X" theory of management which he says is the one in
traditional use today.
This is part of the humanizing process which I think is taking place in
the business world and is closely related to a second topic and Is the
one which is really the subject of this paper — The Growing Social
Awareness of the Business World.
You can see that I have learned early, even though this is my first paper,
that Questers do change the topics of their papers from time to time.
It must be said in the beginning of this paper that my business life
began when I came to Fort Wayne a few days after the bank holiday of 1931*
I can remember the $1.00 day and the NRA when I received an increase to
25/£ an hour.
This was at a time of great change in the social awareness of government.
You all know the programs that grew out of the Roosevelt days.
Today we are faced with a new set of problems and I list only a few,
of which we are all familiar:
