"FREE ENTERPRISE: AW I (*1Y BROTHER'S KEEPER?"
The title of this paper is taken from an Old Testament passage found in the Fifth
Chapter of Genesis. I have taken the question asked by Cain and presented it as
though God were speaking today and addressing our great private enterprise system:
"Where is your brother?" And the answer given is "Am I my brother's keeper?"
Perhaps an explanation of the title is in order.
Explanation of the Title
We live today in the wealthiest nation in the world. Our standard of living is the
highest to be found anywhere. As a nation we are very proud to point to the system
which has made it possible for most of our citizenry to enjoy this high standard of
living. To most of the world and to many within our country we have developed an
affluent society. This system which we praise is basically capitalistic and is
spoken of as the free enterprise or private enterprise system. In many respects,
as a nation, we idolize this system and consider it something which is the result
of our own ingenuity, tile forget that long before the system was ever conceived
two basic gifts were given to this country which later became vital factors in
