The first attempt at repairing a hole in a heart is
successful. A year later, in 1954, the first kidney
transplant between identical twins was accomplished. The
era of the art "- it was too early to call it a science ~~
of vital organ transplantation had begun and great progress
was to be made over the next 32 years.

Dr. James D. Hardy performs the first single lung transplant
on a patient who was totally dependent on cylinder-fed
oxygen. Since then, over 40 such lung transplants have
taken place, including multiple organ transplants involving

PERFORMED THE FIRST KNOWN HEART TRANSPLANT ON A HUMAN BEING.
His patient Louis Washkansky, died 18 days after the
BREAKTHROUGH SURGERY DUE TO A LUNG INFECTION. ELEVEN HEART
TRANSPLANTS LATER, Dr . BARNARD WAS TO JOIN A DONOR'S HEART
TO A PATIENT'S DAMAGE HEART RATHER THAN REPLACE ONE FOR THE
OTHER, THUS CREATING A "DOUBLE PUMP" EFFECT.
